Five Years of Business Travel to India

Over the past 5 years I have been lucky enough to travel to India for business at least once per year. India is a wonderful place. Visiting this country and learning from its people has made me a better person and business leader.

While I have visited Mumbai, Delhi and Agra, almost all of my time has been spent in Pune. I took an unconventional approach to creating an India strategy: I picked a city. India is a huge country and I did not want to spend my time flying around the whole place while I was there. When one of my first employees went back to Mumbai for his wedding, I asked him to pick the city to start our India strategy. Two months later he returned and said Pune.

I had never heard of Pune, but quickly did some research. I learned it was one of the fastest growing cities in the East, had many great universities, and a lot of leading companies were shifting their strategies in India to this city. Also, it was in the mountains and had tropical weather. :) I set up calls with about 10-15 companies and decided on four to meet in person. That was 5 years ago. A lot has changed in India since my first trip. This video post attempts to capture some of that change I have witnessed.

With the Indo-US relations coming together and more and more business looking to India for support, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Indian economy became one of the largest in the world, right next to the US and China. That’s not even considering the export of Kingfisher Beer!

Check out this article from Economic Times.

“We will see India doubling its GDP in the next five years to USD 2.5 trillion,” Sharma said at the 44th convocation of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT).

India is the second fastest growing economy in the world after China even as the developed economies are just coming out of the shocks of the financial tsunami.

Kingfisher might be responsible for the doubling of GDP over the next 5 years :)

Having visited India during height of business process outsourcing (BPO) 10 years ago and regularly during the growth of legal process outsourcing (LPO) over the last few years the transformation is dramatic.
A widespread middle-class has emerged in the largest and even second-tier cities. While poverty, infrastructure gaps and governmental bureaucracy are nagging challenges, the Indian work ethic, positive attitude and ambition is second to none. Ed has discovered the power of extending his business strategy to India. Certainly the Fortune 500 have capitalized on India’s talents. Despite the human capital resources I find it surprising more growth companies don’t invest the time to learn and embrace the capability in cities like Pune. There are many service oriented start-up, middle-market companies in India that share characteristics/values with their peers in the US and make for ideal business partners.

  5. Hi Ed, Great video blog! Nice observations. I lived in the US for over 10 years and returned back to Pune in 2007 – many things had changed in that period.

Would be great to connect on your next Pune trip.
